Top tips from a Grade 9 student:
-
Learn all the content: use the specification. My teacher once said if you understand something, you wouldn't need to memorise it. So, in light of that, I recommend that you learn and understand what you're learning. It will make it much easier when you're revising.
-
Watch Freesciencelessons: I could not say enough how grateful I am for this channel. It contains ALL THE CONTENT, explained amazingly well with visuals & subtitles, and completely covers the specification. Note: I suggest you play the videos at x1.25 or x1.5.
-
MEMORISE ALL THE EQUATIONS: do lots of calculation questions which can help you memorise the equations. Use different techniques to remember them (such as the ones I cover in the how to study section). Lots of the Physics paper depends on the equations you memorise and the ones that will be given on the equation sheet.
-
Watch out for unit conversions: these are very common in the calculation questions.
-
Know your required practicals off by heart: they are vital. 6 markers can come up asking you to plan an investigation, etc. which checks your knowledge on the required practicals. Once again, watch Freesciencelessons, he has the required practicals playlists for each Science & Paper. Write and rewrite the steps & test your friends.
-
Do ALL the past papers under timed conditions: you'll become more prepared and confident. Also, you'll discover that lots of questions & topics are repeated. Plenty of questions came up in my GCSE that were from past papers I had done. Easy marks in the bag.
-
Mark schemes are SUPER important: science in general has a fairly difficult mark scheme. All too often, the mark scheme is super specific and it can be difficult to get marks unless you had everything word for word. If you use the mark scheme and copy it down WORD FOR WORD, it can really help in the long run. Be strict with yourself. Ignore the allow section, it changes every year. Remember, it's better to get it wrong now rather than when it counts.
-
Ask your teacher to repeat something if you don't understand it: this is vital, especially when some concepts can be difficult to understand & you need to know everything extremely well.
-
Put in the effort: go to extra lessons your teacher may offer to help you consolidate the information, test your friends, work hard & smart, put in the hours. It'll be worth it in the end.
